GRP Supports YKAN in Hosting a Dialogue to Advance Sustainable Forest Management

Jakarta, 3 November 2023 - Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) organized a dialogue event as part of the Thought Leadership Forum (TLF) in collaboration with representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Indonesian Forestry Business Association, and several other relevant stakeholders. This event is anticipated to serve as a pivotal platform to sustain Indonesia's forests and achieve the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target.

The event also brought together several environmentally conscious companies, among which is PT Gunung Raja Paksi Tbk (GRP). GRP's involvement is driven by its shared vision with YKAN, which is dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management practices. This vision aligns with the company's objectives, which encompass not only fostering healthy business growth but also upholding a strong commitment to social and environmental responsibility. Sheren Omega, GM of Corporate Planning and Sustainability at GRP, articulated, "One of GRP's steadfast pillars within ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) is 'Contributing to Responsible Environmental Management.' Through our support for this dialogue event, we are devoted to actively participating in efforts to maintain the sustainability of the natural environment and endorse responsible forest management initiatives," as stated by Sheren.

YKAN, being a non-profit scientific organization, is dedicated to preserving land and water areas in Indonesia. Through a non-confrontational approach and a focus on partnerships, YKAN champions sustainable forest management, including sustainable forest production areas, as a strategy to reach the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target.

"YKAN is committed to promoting the implementation of Sustainable Production Forest Management (PHPL) by developing tools that endorse low-emission practices. This includes introducing the Reduced Impact Logging-for Climate Change Mitigation (RIL-C) methodology, which has the potential to reduce carbon emissions from timber harvesting by up to 40%," elucidated Ruslandi, Director of Terrestrial Programs at YKAN. Currently, 27 companies holding Forest Utilization Business Permits (PBPH) are receiving technical support, with intensive assistance also being provided to PT Wana Bakti Persada Utama (WBPU) in the management of a 44,402-hectare PBPH concession area in East Kalimantan.

In 2019, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry introduced the Multiuse Forestry (MUK) policy as a crucial step in promoting sustainable forest management. MUK has evolved into a scheme that supports the enhanced economic value of forests, especially in terms of environmental services, and offers more extensive opportunities for companies and communities to collaborate in advancing sustainable forest management. By adopting a sustainable business model, PBPH holders play a pivotal role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, safeguarding high-conservation value areas and biodiversity, and providing economic benefits to both the companies and the surrounding communities.
