PT Gunung Raja Paksi Tbk (GRP), a key player in Indonesia's steel industry, is actively supporting the transformation of the green industry and the achievement of the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target as set by the Ministry of Industry. The target is to achieve Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2050, which is ten years earlier than the national target set for 2060.

"PT Gunung Raja Paksi is committed to taking an active role in Indonesia's journey towards Net Zero Emission. This includes supporting the transformation of the green industry and achieving the NZE target as set by the Ministry of Industry, in 2050 or sooner than the national target of 2060," said GRP President Director Fedaus in a statement to the media on Thursday (26/9).

Fedaus, who also serves as the Director of the Government Relations and Business Policy Committee at the Indonesia Iron and Steel Industry Association (IISIA), added that as a steel company with significant responsibility in facing the global climate crisis, GRP has started its decarbonization efforts since 2020.

To support this vision, Fedaus explained, GRP launched its ESG Strategy Guidebook in 2022, followed by the Net Zero Strategy, which serves as the framework for the company’s decarbonization programs. Some ongoing initiatives include the operation of a Solar Power Plant (PLTS) with a total capacity of 9.3 Megawatt Peak, one of the largest in West Java. This installation is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 47,400 tons of CO2 per year, with plans to increase capacity to 33 Megawatt Peak in the future. "Additionally, GRP has conducted a feasibility study with Fortescue for the use of renewable hydrogen-based energy," he said.

Most recently, Fedaus continued, GRP has partnered with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, through a USD 60 million investment to enhance the production of low-carbon steel. "This collaboration is the first in the Asian steel industry in the past decade, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable steel industry," he explained.

Through these strategic steps, GRP continues to strengthen its position as a leader in sustainable steel manufacturing, supporting the achievement of the national target for a future without carbon emissions.

In this context, Fedaus also mentioned that GRP is one of the companies in the Indonesia Iron and Steel Industry Association (IISIA) that signed the Joint Declaration between the Ministry of Industry and nine priority industrial subsectors in Indonesia. This declaration reinforces the company’s commitment to continue supporting the steel industry in providing sustainable solutions.

"This declaration is part of our long-term commitment to creating a more environmentally friendly and sustainable steel industry. We believe that collaboration between the government and various industrial sectors will accelerate the transformation towards Net Zero Emission. With green technology innovation and strategic investments, we are committed to continuing to contribute to reducing our carbon footprint and creating a positive impact on Indonesia's economy and environment," concluded Fedaus.

Previously, the Ministry of Industry has also shown its commitment to enhancing the value-added of Indonesia's manufacturing sector through the application of sustainable green industry principles. One of the key targets set is the achievement of Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2050, reflecting Indonesia's seriousness in building a sustainable economy and a more environmentally friendly industry.

A concrete effort by the Ministry of Industry was hosting the first Annual Indonesia Green Industry Summit (AIGIS) in Jakarta on September 19. With the theme "Transformation Into Greener Industry for Sustainable Economy," the event focused on discussions about accelerating the achievement of the NZE target in the industrial sector by 2050. Main discussions included innovation, industrial decarbonization strategies, the development of environmentally friendly technologies, and the potential for green financing.

In his speech, the Minister of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, stated, "The progress of implementing green industry principles in Indonesia can be seen from The Green Future Index 2023 data. Indonesia ranks 49th globally as a country transitioning towards energy, industry, agriculture, and a society that is environmentally friendly through investments in renewable energy, innovation, and environmentally friendly policies. Indonesia’s ranking rose 21 places from 70th in 2022. We certainly hope for support from all other industrial subsectors in achieving the emission reduction target in the industrial sector towards Net Zero Emission by 2050."

To achieve this ambitious target, support from various parties, including industry players, is crucial. The Ministry of Industry also expressed appreciation to nine industrial associations for their involvement in the Joint Declaration between the Ministry of Industry and nine priority industrial subsectors in Indonesia.
