GRP 庆祝世界臭氧日 西卡朗河环保行动

Cikarang, September 23, 2024 – To commemorate World Ozone Day, which is observed annually on September 16, PT Gunung Raja Paksi Tbk (GRP) took real action to preserve the environment around the Cikarang River. This initiative reflects the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and contributes to the global efforts to protect the ozone layer.

The ozone layer, located in the stratosphere, plays a crucial role as Earth’s shield against harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Without this protective layer, life on Earth would face increased risks of UV exposure, leading to skin cancer, eye damage, and negative impacts on ecosystems. World Ozone Day is celebrated every year to raise global awareness about the importance of ozone layer protection and to highlight various initiatives aimed at reducing harmful chemical emissions.

As part of this initiative, GRP employees volunteered alongside the Rehab Kali Cikarang community to undertake a series of environmental conservation efforts. These activities included planting Trembesi and Angsana trees along the Cikarang Riverbanks. Trembesi, also known as the "rain tree," is highly effective at absorbing groundwater, while Angsana trees are well known for reducing air pollution and preventing soil erosion. This tree planting is not only aimed at improving the local ecosystem but also at playing a part in combating climate change.

In addition to tree planting, 200 native Baung fish, an endemic species to the Cikarang River, were released into the water as part of GRP’s efforts to preserve aquatic biodiversity. Volunteers also took part in cleaning up litter around the river, and the local community was educated on the importance of environmental cleanliness and the dangers of dumping waste into the river.

Sheren Omega, GRP's General Manager for Corporate Planning and Sustainability, emphasized the company's dedication to environmental issues as a core part of its business operations. "We believe that environmental preservation is an integral part of our sustainable operations. This initiative is not only a tangible example of our corporate social responsibility but also part of our contribution to global efforts in protecting the ozone layer and combating climate change," said Sheren.

The initiative was well-received by the Rehab Kali Cikarang community, the project's partner. M. Yahya, the leader of the community, stated that this joint effort was valuable for both the river’s ecosystem and the local community’s awareness. "We greatly appreciate PT Gunung Raja Paksi’s initiative. This collaboration not only helps preserve the Cikarang River but also directly educates local residents on the importance of maintaining cleanliness and environmental health," said Yahya.

Data from Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) shows that the country successfully reduced emissions of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), a potent greenhouse gas, by 37.5% in 2020, increasing to 55% by 2023. In line with government efforts, GRP continues to support environmental initiatives through its eco-friendly operations. By raising awareness of the importance of protecting the ozone layer and local ecosystems, PT Gunung Raja Paksi remains committed to creating a better environment for future generations.
