Collaboration with Total Energy: Evidence of GRP's Commitment to Sustainable Economic Growth
The management of PT Gunung Raja Paksi (GRP) is wholly dedicated to implementing ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) principles. According to Tony Taniwan, a member of the GRP Executive Committee, one of the largest private steel businesses in the nation is continuing to create strategies and measures to decarbonize its steel production. One way to do this is to promote the use of clean energy while also taking actions to limit carbon emissions.
On March 23, 2023, GRP spoke at a Total Energies ENEOS event titled "Road to Net Zero: How Corporates in Asia are Addressing Climate Ambitions." Tony emphasized the significance of incorporating ESG ideas into the business's operations. In October 2022, GRP launched the ESG Strategy Handbook, which will serve as a guiding principle in developing the company's business strategy. "Then in February 2023, we also launched the GRP Net Zero Roadmap, which focuses on environmental aspects in the ESG focus," he explained.
900 kWp (kilowatt peak) solar panels were successfully installed on the factory roof by GRP in 2022, Tony continued. This is the first step in GRP's transformation towards a sustainable and ecologically conscious business. "I am happy to report that we have already made a significant progress toward achieving our objective. This project demonstrates how committed Total Energies and Gunung Raja Paksi are to protecting the environment and lowering our carbon footprint. We are moving toward a better and more sustainable future by employing clean energy, "Tony gave a statement today in Jakarta.
"Thank you Total Energies. We look forward to continuing this journey together, as we work towards a shared vision of a more sustainable world," he added.
On the Net Zero Roadmap, he continued, GRP involves identifying and implementing solutions categorized into five key areas.
What are they? First, fuel switching to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and increase the use of renewable energy. Second, energy efficiency improvements across operations by ensuring production process improvements and exploring new technologies to support carbon neutrality.
The third is sourcing green power. In order to put this into action, GRP and Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2022 to investigate using hydrogen at the plant. He added, "We are also collaborating with our energy suppliers to identify decarbonization alternatives.
Fourth, carbon offsetting includes efforts that aid in lowering greenhouse gas emissions and/or boosting carbon sequestration. For instance, planting trees or restoring the land.
And fifth, collaboration and partnership as enablers to ensure the success of the decarbonization journey. "We are working with the Indonesian Iron & Steel Industry Association (IISIA) and joining the Net Zero Hub by the Chamber of Commerce (KADIN) to collaborate on this key initiative," Tony explains.
So, what about GRP's greenhouse gas emission intensity? Tony explained, GRP produces relatively less greenhouse gases compared to other similar industry players. This is because GRP is an EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) steel producer compared to the Blast Furnace that operates. "We will continue to work to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions even further through the decarbonization process," Tony concluded. (*)
