Launching ESG Strategy Handbook, GRP Leads Southeast Asian Steel Industry
PT Gunung Raja Paksi Tbk (GRP) launched the Environmental, Social and Governance Strategy Guidebook for ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance). The launch on Thursday, October 13, 2022, was also accompanied by the establishment of the Sustainability Department. The launch itself makes GRP a leading steel company in Southeast Asia that continues to focus on ESG in every line of its business.
GRP's General Manager of Planning & Sustainability, Sheren Omega, explained that the launch was aimed at addressing climate change and social issues. Among other things, such as equality and human rights. In addition, these efforts are also in line with the industry's vision towards sustainability and support the Government of Indonesia to achieve zero carbon by 2060.
“This handbook is in line with GRP's determination to change the traditional approach in an industry that accounts for 8% of global emissions. To that end, we are working with industry experts to assess the steel landscape in the region. We believe that with the ESG Strategy Handbook, we are directed to achieve more sustainable steel production,” said Sheren Omega today.
Sheren explained that the ESG Strategy Guidebook outlines the key steps the company will take to achieve sustainable steel production. This builds on GRP's efforts, such as making products certified by global standards and purchasing carbon credits. Currently, he continued, GRP is even listed as one of the first steel producers in Southeast Asia to have purchased carbon credits. "The ESG Strategy Handbook is also to guide the Sustainability Department in implementing the company's goals and vision and mission," said Sheren.
To date, he continued, GRP has built its ESG goals on these five pillars. Namely, Responsible Procurement; Environmental and Social Compliance; Energy Transition and Low Carbon Solutions; Contribute to Responsible Environmental Management; and Nurturing Talent. The development of these five pillars is aligned with international standards such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the ResponsibleSteel Principles.
“These five pillars focus on encouraging and providing guidance on actions in steel production. It also aims to mitigate impacts stemming from the development of the steel industry, such as raw material shortages and supply chain problems.” Sheren explained.
Meanwhile, GRP President Director Abednedju Giovano Warani Sangkaeng added, GRP has a mission to decarbonize steel production and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Southeast Asia region. For this reason, as demand for steel increases, it is also responsible for producing steel in a way that minimizes environmental damage.
This effort is very important, considering that steel is a major component in Indonesia's exports. “For that, we must ensure that sustainable steel production is the main thing for all steel producers. We hope the ESG Strategy Handbook can pave the way forward for best practices in steel manufacturing,” concluded the man who is familiarly called Argo. (*)
